There are also ten key principles that underpin how the award works. They state that the award should be:

  1. Non-competitive - its about achieving your personal best;
  2. Available to all - for anyone who wants to take up its challenge;
  3. Voluntary - you choose to join and commit your time;
  4. Flexible - you can design your own programme and start at which level you want;
  5. Balanced - the programme has four sections which all develop different skills;
  6. Progressive - each level of the award demands more time and commitment;
  7. Achievement focused - you set your own goals;
  8. A marathon not a sprint - the time requirements are a minimum!
  9. Personal development - you will develop new skills;
  10. Enjoyable - you should find it enjoyable and satisfying!
