Amalfi Challenge

What is it?

The Amalfi Challenge provides a flexible framework for 16 to 25 year olds to undertake a programme of personal development, whilst working towards the Amalfi Award. The Amalfi Challenge is self-directed with you setting your own goals with guidance and support from other people. It is achieved by completing 12 elements from the Amalfi Challenge framework.

The Amalfi Cross provides a framework. To complete the first part of the Amalfi Award you must complete four elements. These four elements do not have to be from each arm, choose which ever arm you prefer, allowing complete flexibility.

Service

Service is vital to the work of St John Ambulance. Many people give up hundreds of hours of their spare time every year to volunteer within their community. This section of the Amalfi Challenge is intended to help you explore those opportunities to a fuller extent.

Relationships

Working together is an important life skill and there are many different types of relationships. Relationships will help you to develop your skills in working with other people in a variety of different situations.

Developing your relationship skills will help you develop your self- confidence, provide opportunities to develop leadership capabilities and your ability to work effectively as a team member.

Challenge

Challenge is your opportunity to pursue a personal goal.  It could lead to a qualification or help you to achieve a personal ambition. Alternatively, you could decide to complete a group challenge.  It is up to you!

Society

Understanding where we live and our society enables us to be aware of other people's situations. Within St John Ambulance we aim to serve the community, a deeper understanding of different aspects of society can help us better our work.

Within this arm there is an opportunity to be aware of local, national and international issues and undertake a project of your choice that will increase your, and others, awareness of society issues.

There will be two main people to help you on your Amalfi Challenge journey. These are:

Amalfi supporter

The aim of the Amalfi Challenge is about looking at a person's ability and encouraging them to move forward. Each participant has a supporter to encourage and motivate them, helping them to set appropriate goals and targets. Therefore the choice of a Supporter is crucial. The young person is only cheating him / herself if they set a low standard for their challenge.

Amalfi coordinator

This person will be responsible for signing off challenges and accrediting your hard work.

So, what's in it for me?

It will be fun!

You choose the challenges so they will all be things that you will enjoy doing! If you are a person who enjoys trying something different, testing yourself, or learning new skills, then the Amalfi Challenge is definitely for you!

It provides a tool to display your volunteering on your CV.

In a competitive age, employers are increasingly looking for rounded individuals when recruiting. This means that volunteering with a charity is extremely impressive and can make the difference when applying for that dream job. Just ask other St John Ambulance members how often their voluntary work has been raised in job interviews! Simply participating in the challenge can show a potential employer that you are interested in challenging yourself and acquiring new skills.

It allows you to consider the skills you develop while volunteering.

Unless you stop and reflect on your volunteering it is unlikely that you realise the full range of transferable skills that you have gained or developed while having fun! The Amalfi Challenge provides the opportunity to do this and identify those skills and perhaps even gain external accreditation for them.

It will help you to learn something about yourself.

The Amalfi Challenge provides an opportunity stretch yourself and perhaps find out things about yourself you didn't know before.

It can provide the impetus to drive you to achieve a life-long ambition.

Running the London marathon, overcoming a fear of water to learn how to swim, and seeing your name in print in the university newspaper. If there are things that you have always wanted to do but never got around to it or found the time, the Amalfi Challenge can provide the motivation to get out there and do it!

It empowers you to gain the most from your volunteering from St John Ambulance.

Whether you want to develop yourself as a more advanced first aider, a trainer, youth leader, adventure leader, radio controller or many, many, more, St John Ambulance has the resources to make it happen. It might only be when you enrol on the Amalfi Challenge that you uncover the full range of activities within St John Ambulance and find what you really want to do.
