Lord's cricket ground
The county finals at Lord's cricket ground have been going on
for over 25 years. St John Ambulance has provided first aid
cover from the very start.
Although play only goes on for about a day, St John
Ambulance begins to prepare for the event six months in advance.
St John Ambulance works closely with Lord's cricket ground
staff and Westminster council to ensure that the attending public
and the players have a truly safe environment in which to watch and
play cricket.
Each year between 25,000 and 30,000 people attend the County One
Day final. St John Ambulance provides over 30 volunteers including
doctors and nurses. A cardiac unit is also on hand with three
doctors, a nurse and a specially trained volunteer team. St John
Ambulance always has a volunteer GP on hand to deal with any
general health complaints people may suffer.
As for the players, there is a team of first aiders located near
the playing field throughout the match to provide any support they
might need.
The most common injuries that St John Ambulance volunteers treat
throughout the match are cuts, bruises, and sprains. If typical
English grey skies give way to sunshine, heat exhaustion becomes
another frequent ailment dealt with by the volunteers.
