This calculator will indicate the number of Fire Marshals you need. This evaluation is based on the information you supply and is only for advice purposes. This does not remove the need for a risk assessment of the workplace to ensure that an adequate number of Fire Marshals are appointed.

How did we arrive at this figure?

You need to have a Fire Marshal for each significant area in each building and these must be covered for any shift patterns you operate. You need an additional Fire Marshal for every assembly point and then adequate cover for sickness and absence levels.

What is a significant area?

A significant area can be defined by the time it takes a designated Fire Marshal to account for a specified area as being safely evacuated. This area could be a section of an office or factory or anywhere else that employees and members of the public have access to. As a guide, it should take no longer than 1 minute for a Fire Marshal to be able to account for a significant area and to be able to reach the Fire Exit safely.

Your legal obligation

There is a legal obligation to consider all persons using the premises, including contractors, students, visitors and customers. Consideration must also be given to those with special needs in terms of evacuation support and equipment must comply with DDA legislation to ensure their safe removal from the premises.

Training for your Fire marshals

Our Fire Marshal training course covers the role of the designated fire marshal. It also gives you the opportunity to learn about the different types of fire extinguisher and how to use them correctly. We have more than 1,000 courses available at 150 training venues across the UK.
