About us

The West Midlands is one of the largest
and most active St John Ambulance counties. In 2005 we trained
over 30,000 people in first aid; for work, at school, or simply
because it is great to have the knowledge to know what to do in an
emergency.
Our course portfolio includes first aid courses for every situation; but also
related health and safety and fire marshal training.
What we do
Our 800 volunteers provide first aid
cover at all-but-one of the league football clubs in the West
Midlands: Aston Villa, Coventry City, Walsall, West Bromwich Albion
and Wolverhampton. We provide cover at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, at
major civic events including the Godiva festival, Wolverhampton
Marathon, the Radio 1 roadshow, ArtsFest and Tough Guy among
others.
In 2005, our volunteers provided
225,000 hours of community service. If we paid them at the national
minimum wage rate, it would cost £1.13 million pounds. We treated
4,047 patients.
Our transport crews undertake contract
work for the many NHS
trusts throughout the region as well as other organisations such as
care homes. All the monies raised through our first aid training
and contract transport work helps to support our voluntary
first-aid provision and youth work.
We have over 60 youth units, providing
around 1,000 young people between the ages of five and 18
development opportunities including camping, adventurous
activities, social development and first aid training. Our new
youth programme has over 100 different badge subjects available,
and puts youth participation at the heart of what we do.
Our County HQ is based in the centre of Birmingham, and we have
training centres across the county. Our fleet of over 30 ambulances
includes 4x4 vehicles and a command and control unit.
