Race night raises funds

Royal Windsor Racecourse played host to a
charity Race Evening recently, raising £400,000 in aid of St John
Ambulance and Starlight Children's Foundation.
Jointly chaired by key racing figure
Major Christopher Hanbury and world renowned racehorse trainer,
Nicky Henderson, the evening was described as ‘a runaway
success’.
Three hundred guests, including Race
Jockey Walter Swinburn and racing pundit John McCririck
were treated to a champagne reception and canapés,
followed by a delectable three course meal in the Riverside Marquee
while enjoying six live races on the Windsor Racecourse.
After dinner, an auction of luxury
items was held, tempting the patrons to open their hearts
and empty their pockets. Ranging from wonderful holidays to
beautiful bronzes, charismatic auctioneer Nick Nugent auctioned off
over 20 items, the most successful being a large watercolour by
Peter Curling which raised £25,000 alone.
Guests were also given the chance to
win a brand new Toyota Aygo in the prize draw by
pledging anything from £100 to £500 or more to help towards life
saving equipment for St John Ambulance volunteers or a day out for
a Starlight child. Sponsors on the evening included
Ladbrokes, Tote, Coolmore Stud and Pertemps.
Nicky Henderson said: ‘The evening was a
runaway success and we are grateful to everyone who came and
donated to such important causes.’
Rosie Myres, Special Events Fundraiser for St
John Ambulance, said: ‘We’re delighted with the huge success of the
evening and thankful to our sponsors and all those who came along
to support these two great causes. For St John Ambulance this money
will go a long way to making sure that everyone who needs first aid
is able to receive it.’
