Christmas week support

St John Ambulance is providing emergency support to affected areas during the cold weather conditions.

Volunteers are working with the ambulance service by deploying 4x4 ambulances to hard to reach roads, particularly in the home counties, where regular ambulances are unable to get through and setting up first aid tents where they are most needed.

Christmas spirit

In London’s Liverpool Street station on Saturday night volunteers manning a first aid tent rushed to the aid of an inebriated man who fell on the station staircase. He slipped 20 feet and suffered facial injuries.

Help for the homeless

In Bedfordshire St John Ambulance first aiders are providing support to a cold weather shelter set up to provide food and rest to homeless people during the cold snap.

In Essex, volunteers assisted when the A12 was shut and cars were abandoned after two lorries jack knifed.

In Cornwall, as a result of the snow and ice over the weekend the local ambulance trust were faced with a backlog of urgent transfers so requested five St John Ambulance crews who helped out, with a sixth on standby.

4x4 assistance

Ian MacKenzie, Chief Officer (Volunteers), St John Ambulance says ‘Suffolk, Sussex, Essex, Kent and Surrey have been the worst hit by heavy snow, but our volunteers have been on-call all over the country from Thursday night with specially designed 4x4 ambulances making sure that patients requiring assistance are reached and given the care they need. We will continue efforts to assist the ambulance service for as long as we are needed.’

St John Ambulance provides a rapid and effective response supporting the statutory services in the most difficult situations and gives vital, immediate aid to those most in need.
