St John Ambulance volunteers save football fan's life
St John Ambulance volunteers saved the
life of a Scunthorpe United supporter on Saturday 5 May.
Eric Frow, aged 71 and a life-long Scunthorpe fan, collapsed
during the League One home game against Carlisle. St John Ambulance
volunteers were called to assist Eric, and quickly diagnosed that
Eric was in cardiac arrest.
St John Ambulance volunteers Michelle and Christian
Long, Andrew Wilson and Jade Parkin, kept Eric’s airway open
and delivered a shock with the on-site defibrillator. The second
shock was successful, allowing Eric to be moved to the medical room
and subsequently transported to Scunthorpe General Hospital by East
Midlands Ambulance Service.

Eric is now recovering and from his bedside, his daughter, Sarah
Reid said, 'I just can’t thank St John Ambulance and the Paramedics
enough for all they have done. My father was extremely lucky
that everyone was able to act so swiftly to save his life'.
Major Steven Turner, Commander of St John Ambulance Humberside,
today said: ‘I am extremely proud of the way our members reacted to
this incident which is a reflection on their training and
commitment and proves that first aid training can and does make a
difference.’
