Hotting up at Wimbledon
St John Ambulance on hand to help handle the heat
While things are hotting up on the courts, temperatures are
expected to soar in the stands. With highs of up to 26 degrees a
possibility, St John Ambulance volunteers are on alert for
a busy time.
Since the beginning of the tournament on Monday, St John
Ambulance has treated over 400 Wimbledon-goers,
largely for heat and sun related injuries.
But as temperatures begin to rise, the organisation has issued
the following advice:
'We are lucky enough to have seen some fantastic weather so far, but this does mean an increase in heat and sun related incidents.

Officer in charge, St John Ambulance Wimbledon Operation
- Stay hydrated - if the weather is hot; ensure you have water
with you at all times. Queuing at events such as Wimbledon can be a
lengthy process.
- Protect yourself from the sun - It's easy to get caught up in
the excitement of the event and neglect the risk from sunburn and
sunstroke. Cover yourself up and use a good sunblock.
- Wear a hat - This will provide extra protection against the
sun.
Some 50 members of St John Ambulance in London,
including doctors, nurses and an ambulance are on site each day
throughout the action, responsible for treating or
assisting spectators and staff.
Darron Hazelby, officer-in-charge of St John Ambulance's
Wimbledon operation, said: 'We are lucky enough to have seen some
fantastic weather so far, but this does mean an increase in heat
and sun related incidents.
'We are encouraging those who turn out to enjoy Wimbledon to
heed our advice, wearing sunblock and a hat to protect them from
the sun, and ensuring they have water with them at all times to
help stay hydrated.'
