First aid at Visa 2012 party
London's Olympic handover party saw dozens of excited
party-goers requiring medical treatment in and around St James's
Park at the weekend.
St John Ambulance were also proud to mark the occasion
of the handover by raising a flag at its London District
Headquarters in honour of the Games passing to Great Britain.
Some 71 first aiders were on hand to cover the Visa 2012 Party
as part of the Capital’s celebrations. Three treatment centres and
four ambulances were also in attendance.
Confirmed figures show that during the closing ceremony of the
Games, while London shared in the excitement of becoming the
official Olympic City, 46 people were treated by the first aiders,
with six being transported to hospital.
The casualty figures reflect that there was a significant turn-out in the centre of London, but we are fortunate that most of the incidents were minor and people were able to be treated on scene or discharged from hospital very quickly

‘Sunday’s handover party in London was always going to be a very
busy day for our volunteers, particularly with the GB team having
done so well to raise the spirits of the public back home.
‘The casualty figures reflect that there was a significant
turn-out in the centre of London, but we are fortunate that most of
the incidents were minor and people were able to be treated on
scene or discharged from hospital very quickly.’
In addition to the Visa 2012 Party St John Ambulance London also
covered handover celebrations in Trafalgar Square, Horniman’s
Pleasance within Notting Hill Carnival, Victoria Park and
Shoreditch.
