First aid given after horse bolts

Volunteers were called into action at a horse show in Portsmouth this week when a shire horse broke loose from its handler and ran into the crowd.

The large horse ran into the crowds of the arena, dragging its handler along with it.

Ambulance crew on duty treated the injured handler and a member of the crowd and transported them to hospital. A 33-week pregnant lady was also treated for severe shock and taken to the local maternity unit.

Four other injured members of the public were treated at the St John Ambulance first aid post.

David Harrison, Commander of Hampshire said: ‘The team worked really well together in a calm and professional manner. I am really proud of them – they coped well in a difficult situation and deserve all the credit they are receiving!’
